Ride Details: Sunday, July 10

Welcome to the 2011 Pictou County leg of the Heart Land Tour! Once again, we have a wonderful day planned, and want to warmly welcome cyclists to join in at any point along the route. Your Pictou County Core Team members this year are Gordon Young, Katherine Saulnier, Ross Landry and Andrew Joyce. Our "Race Marshall", reknowned cyclist and cycling mentor, Sherry Huybers, is back to keep us on track with timelines. We look forward to Half Ironman- Triathlete Tony Corbin, joining us this year, as a cyclist, and as a leader in the RCMP Kids Bike Rodeo in the afternoon on Sunday. Clint Snell, owner and operator of our local bike shop, Pictou County Cycle, will also be helping out, with merchandise prizes, including a youth bicycle. Local athletes looking for a full challenge can start their day at 0900 with a "Run for the Lobster", opting for either 5 or 10 km distance, then hop on their bicycles and meet HLT riders along our ride through Pictou Landing .
Please look at the schedule, and select the route that best matches your cycling ability, so you will not be left behind or finish way too soon. Register on the website anytime prior to event day. Riders will once again be provided with a Heart Land Tour dri fit Tshirt as in previous years.
Here is what our event looks like so far. Stay tuned for updates, in the event of road work, or other developments.
--------------------------------------------------
To begin our stay in Pictou County, the entire HLT Core Team will arrive Saturday July 9th , just in time to join in the Lobster Carnival Parade. Watch for us, and if you have a bicycle, join us!

Sunday July 10th:

Morning Ride :

8:45am – 12:30pm, Longest, most challenging (60K), 24km/hr pace.
Depart Carver’s on the waterfront at 8:45am
Our ride officially begins, with an RCMP escort from Carvers. We must depart on time, as the Run for the Lobster road race leaves the CN grounds at 0900. Some of our Core Team members are avid runners, so watch for them in the run. They may choose to participate in the run, and join the ride along the route mid morning. Local runners are welcome to do the same.

We will leave Pictou, head to the rotary, and travel across the causeway. Enjoy the view of the water on both sides. The cormorants will make their presence known, as we pass their nests, as will the famous pulp and paper mill. Stimulate all your senses, courtesy of Pictou County!
From the causeway, we continue along the highway, until we reach the Granton turnoff on the right. We turn onto Abercrombie Road and stay on this road as we travel some rolling hills into the town of New Glasgow. We turn left onto the George St bridge, then head right to the New Glasgow YMCA. We will have a short stop here, approximately 20 minutes.

We leave the YMCA, and head down East River road to Trenton. We go through Trenton, past the Connector, and turn right onto Little Egypt Road. Again we encounter some beautiful countryside, and rolling hills. We turn left when we reach Chance Harbour Road, as we head to Pictou Landing First Nations. We have a brief stop here, approximately 25 minutes.

When we leave Pictou Landing, we face a short challenging hill, as we make our way back to the Trenton Connector. We cross over to Abercrombie, and head back to Pictou for lunch at 1230. All riders will be provided with a meal courtesy of SubWay, PCHA, and Scotsburn Dairy. We regroup to leave for the various afternoon rides at 1330.

RCMP Bike Rodeo

CN Station Grounds 2:30pm – 3:30pm*

Afternoon rides:

depart Carvers at 1:30pm
The afternoon ride will offer 3 different routes, so that participants of all ages and abilities can join in. All rides leave at the same time, before they split into the different routes. The shorter routes are designed to bring the young riders back to CN Field to participate in the RCMP Bike Rodeo. All rides will regroup at CN Field, at end of Bike Rodeo, for a mass ride to Reception at Carver’s field.

Option#1:

42K, at 24k/hr pace. 1330 – 1530
Seasoned riders can set a goal of completing this route at a steady pace in order to be back to Carvers on time for the reception.
Depart Carvers in a large group, single file, and travel to the Pictou Rotary (roundabout). We will be escorted through this by RCMP, as we head to Lyons Brook Road. There we will have an opportuntiy to try out the new bike lane. We stay on Lyons Brook Rd until we reach Scotsburn Rd. We take this slight right to stay on Scotsburn road until we reach Meadowville Station Rd. Here we turn right on to this road and travel toward Hardwood Hill rd, until you reach a right turn that places riders on River John Rd. Travel this scenic road until you come to Harris Road. Here you must be careful to take a quick left then immediate right. This keeps the group on River John Rd. Stay on this road until you reach the Pictou Rotary, then exit into town of Pictou, and head towards the CN field. We will gather with the other riders here for our group ride to the reception at Carvers field.

Option#2:

19K, slower pace, great for mountain bikes. 1330 – 1430
Depart Carver’s as above, and head to Rotary. Riders will travel through Pictou streets to the Rotary, then exit on to Lyons Brook road. We will be escorted by RCMP, and will be together with the longer ride (option #1,above) for a short portion of this road. We will travel on this scenic road, which features the new bike lane, until reaching Scotch Hill rd. This is where we break into 2 groups, as ride #1 keeps going, and ride #2 turns right. Travel on Scotch Hill road until arriving at Beck road. This short road is hard packed dirt, so challenge your road bike a bit, and try not to get too dirty. At the end of Beck Road, turn right onto River John Rd. Stay on this road, until you reach Harris road. There is a short left turn there, followed quickly by a right turn. This keeps you on a path back to the Rotary. Once at the rotary, head through town streets until you arrive at the CN field. Here, all riders meet to travel under police escort, to reception at Carvers field.

Option#3:

11K, leisurely pace, great for families, small bikes. 1330 - 1430
Depart Carver’s with large group, but turn left at Bayview road, and then first left onto Division road. Head west on Division Rd, toward Glen Rd, then onto Pine Tree Rd. Head south toward waterfront, with a slight right to stay on Pine Tree Rd. Turn left at West River Rd, onto Water St, then right to the CN field. Riders should finish in time to make the RCMP Bike Rodeo.

A short reception will take place at end of the ride. There will be refreshments for all riders, and guest speakers to help celebrate our day in Pictou County. All participants are welcome to submit their names for the active living draw prizes. These prizes will be drawn for at the reception, and include bicycles and biking gear. Look your best as you participate in photos for our website. At the end of the reception, the HLT bus leaves for their next leg of the tour, Sydney.

Please check the website for other rides along our tour. Riders are welcome to join the Core Team, in completing as many legs as they can during our HLT week!
